Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Night
“Asano-kun.”
“Y-yes…!”
As homeroom ended and I was about to leave the classroom, Morihara-sensei called out to me. She was staring at me from the hallway during break time a while ago. I wondered if it had anything to do with that.
Sensei walked over to me, stopped at a fairly close distance, and looked up at me. Usually, our exchanges were unseen by anyone, as if she were using magic, but today was different.
“…Asano-kun and sensei… are gazing at each other. As I thought, those two…”
I can feel so many stares on my back!!
And from the voice, it seems like it’s Okuno-san.
It seemed like the misunderstanding hadn’t been cleared up yet.
Pierced by gazes from the front and back, I was unable to move a muscle. Sensei gently lowered her eyes, then met my gaze again, and finally opened her mouth.
“Since you’ve just recovered, be careful on your way home. See you tomorrow.”
“Ah, yes… Thank you very much.”
After saying that in a flat tone, sensei left.
For some reason, I felt a sense of incongruity in her brisk steps.

I went straight home, finished my homework and review, and was lying in bed when I remembered the fact that sensei lived in the house directly across from mine.
I asked my mom about it, and she said she thought it had been vacant until recently… Me too, though.
Speaking of which, that person… is full of mysteries.
The biggest mystery is why she keeps getting so close…
…Could it be… just maybe. Sensei… me…
No, that’s not possible.
That’s definitely a misunderstanding.
This must be that thing. That thing where adolescent unpopular boys fall in love when someone is kind to them.
No, but then that would mean I like sensei.
…This is no good. My head is all messed up.
For now, I’ll go to the convenience store, browse some manga, and clear my head.
***
“Ah…”
I locked the front door and was about to head to the convenience store when I had an unexpected encounter.
The other person was, of course, Morihara-sensei.
“Good evening.”
“…G-good evening.”
Since the sun was almost setting, we exchanged evening greetings. I was about to just pass by…
“Wait.”
I couldn’t.
“You’re just getting over being sick, aren’t you? Where are you going at this hour?”
What sensei said was so reasonable that I couldn’t argue.
As I awkwardly touched my neck, sensei suddenly stepped closer and covered my forehead with her cool hand.
“…It seems like you’re fine now. But we can’t be too sure. If it’s not urgent, you should do it tomorrow.”
“Yes…”
Well, it wasn’t anything special, and I could do it tomorrow. It was true that I had just recovered. Sensei’s eyes seemed unusually glazed over… Huh?
“S-sensei… Excuse me…!”
“Eh?”
I placed my hand on sensei’s forehead. Because I was sure I had figured out the reason for the incongruity I felt at school.
“This is… Sensei, you have a fever…”
“Oh my… Eh? Ah, well… this is…”
“I’m sorry. I probably infected you.”
With my hand still on her forehead, which clearly felt hot, I apologized to sensei with all my might.
What am I doing…? Sensei, your face is so red… You must be feeling really bad…
Perhaps because of the fever, sensei had lost her usual coolness and was flustered. I had never seen her eyes darting around like this before.
For even a moment, I thought, “Oh no, she’s incredibly cute!!” What kind of indecent jerk was I?
I slapped myself on the cheek, and sensei’s eyes widened in surprise.
“…What was that?”
“No, it’s an old habit.”
“…I’ve been watching you ever since we met… but did you have that habit?”
“Anyway, let’s go inside. You’ll feel even worse if we keep talking out here.”
As I urged sensei inside, I was panicking internally. I felt like I had just missed something important.
By the way, I don’t have a habit of slapping myself.
